He is gay in denial.  He will string you along for as long as you are prepared to go.  

I too thought it impossible my ex had another life going, but, as I found out later, he did. 

Denial doesn't mean don't know it means not telling - he's not the one who's confused, he is sowing confusion in you.

Can you go away for a few days?  you'll be surprised how much clearer you can think when away from him.
