Unsure what to do with new information from my husband

This is my first post so I apologize in advance for the length of the message. My husband and I have been together for 12 years, married only a short time, and we have two young children together. There have been situations that have happened in the past where he felt a need to explore his feelings and had cheated on me once before with a man. We overcame that issue, went to therapy, and continued our relationship. After getting married, I felt as if the love was stronger, butterflies, and I felt extremely confident in our marriage. Just recently my husband told me he was having feelings coming back about being with a man, but he is unsure if he is gay. He has gone back and forth a lot with saying he is gay, or bisexual. In the past, he did admit to being bisexual, and I was totally ok with it and had open arms with no judgement. I honestly feel so lost and confused on what I should do, or what I think is right. I love him deeply and want the best for our marriage and most importantly our children. He tells me he is more gay than straight, but wants to be with me, works things out, he is only sexually attracted to me as a woman, and doesn't want anyone else. He wants to go to couples therapy to see what our options are and how we can make this work. I am extremely hurt and unsure where I should start. Do I stay and probably get hurt again? Do I leave now and start to heal? I go back and forth with wanting to work things out with him and then saying to myself I should leave because I don't want to go through the pain again. I just need advice or comfort knowing I am not the only one in this situation, I truly feel like my world has been shattered. I can honestly say I am in denial of this whole thing, I don't want either of us to live in regret and I surely don't want to be his cover or stop him from truly being who he is.

Re: Unsure what to do with new information from my husband

Love-or-comfort; you've made a strong attempt at caring about what he is going through! My questions to you are: Has he tried to understand what this is doing to you? Is he capable of meeting your needs? I am sorry you are going through all this, but when you can also make room for your own needs as a spouse you will start down the path that is healthier for you. My soon to be X is still not honest with me despite being caught. I could never trust him again after the 30 years of lies that I believed. This sounds much different from your situation, but maybe you have an opportunity here because of his honesty to avoid some years of the lonliness these relationships bring because he has told you these things. Just my initial thoughts. Please access your support system and get a therapist too if you feel you need it. And know facing the truth does indeed help the pain get better over time.

Re: Unsure what to do with new information from my husband

You should know that a lot of these guys truly believe, and insist, that they are bi and not gay.  But I know that my ex husband was not even remotely attracted to women.  He cheated on me throughout the entirety of our marriage, but never with women.  Only men.  He cut me off sexually when our daughter was an infant, so that by the time I filed for divorce I hadn't had sex for over two decades.  So if a person is happy in a marriage where he can go two decades without touching a woman, but can't seem to manage a weekend without sneaking off to hook up with a guy, he's not bi.  Full stop.

I think he really believed it.  I think he never wanted to admit he'd just completely defrauded me into marriage.

Walkbymyself: I had a pretty similar experience. Mine would never admit to being bi or gay, so I definately feel the defrauded thing. I own my responsibility for ignoring signs and making excuses at times, but the fact that he would never feel bad enough even to say anything when I was doing that... And boy could he make his own excuses. These guys are sneaky!

Welcome to our forum LoC..

Admitting to you he's more gay than straight is very honest of him. Telling you he "wants to work it out" sounds to me like he's not brave enough to say it to anybody else and wants you to stick around while *he* figures out *his* life. I'm sure when he's worked it out you'll either be in a one-sided open marriage or you, hopefully, would have gathered enough support, evidence and strength around you to decide what's the best life for you. And your children.

Couples therapy works to keep you in an unhappy marriage. Individual therapy may open your eyes to a happier future.
