Re: British TV presenter comes out of closet after 27 yrs of marriage

He was already back on live tv last night. This morning Joan Collins asked on live tv “why now, when we all knew already!” She was shut down immediately. More to come on all this I’m sure. Reckon his career is over.

Re: British TV presenter comes out of closet after 27 yrs of marriage

It's an example of the one sidedness approach of media and contemporary culture as soon as the magic word "LGBT" has something to do with it.

We had an encounter with the media ourselves.

I'm in a different situation than most here. 15 years ago my wife discovered to be lesbian (after 20 years of marriage). It was difficult to navigate, but we got to a successful and very happy MOM.
Last year we were asked to participate in a documentary about "Christians and homosexuality", to be broadcasted on national TV (as it turned out it was scheduled for prideweek).
We were hesitant of course, but they were very convincing that it would be a program of integrity and respect towards the people involved. They really won our complete trust.
Because the subject is unknown to the general public and very rarely ever mentioned, we decided to agree. So we told our story. 35 years of marriage is quite a lot to tell about (many hours of recording only result in about 10 minutes actual program). In spite of many difficulties we had to overcome, it's a positive story with a happy end. We hoped this could be supportive to other couples in the same circumstances.

Several months after the recording, we saw the result...
To our horror they had changed our story to the complete opposite of what we told. It started with mentioning the Nashville statement, the voice over suggested our motivation to stay married was because homosexuality is sinful according to the Bible. (WTF??? we told them explicitly we didn't look upon in that way). They edited parts of the interview that related to years before my wife's coming out, (difficulties in our sexual relation because my wife went though years of deep depression), and suggested this was describing our current situation (so bye bye happy end). And so forth, and so forth. We experienced the full power of suggestion, voice-over and editing... On screen we heard and saw us telling a complete different story of our life. Like we were puppets in their theatre.

As it turned out they wanted to depict "Christians who are struggling against feelings and homosexuality" directly from the start. That's the negative image the subjects has, that's what the people want to hear, and that's what the media will provide.
The whole thing of depicting our story with "integrity and respect" was a charade. That it would be devastating to us to rape our story like that seemingly didn't mind to them. All that mattered was that they could score with a juicy program about those sad Christians.

It took us months to recover and we are still angry about what happened. Wondering if everybody that participated was into the scheme or some of them were just plain ignorant. No one ever apologized for what they did.

So media and MOM's... it's hardly about telling the truth. It's motivated by politics, the LGBT movement, audience ratings and who knows what other forces drive them.

Hi Dutchman,  sorry to hear you went through that, it must have been devastating.  I remember in my youth the saying was the camera does not lie.  well hasn't that changed these days!

Dutchman, I'm sorry to hear your words and intentions were twisted.  That must've been so crazy-making to see your very positive story turn sour and support a negative viewpoint.  Good for you both in making it work.

I think it is so important for you to tell your OWN story.  Places like Medium encourage a diversity of viewpoints.  I'm happy to be able to put my two cents out there.  You might want to try it?  If it was on TV it is always good to link to a news story that gives it context.

best wishes.  L x
