Re: Counselling/therapy needs of straight partners

Near as I can tell, this person is not trying to drum up business. i am watching closely, however. In addition, he stated that he had come across straight spouse clients and needed insight in how to deal with them. I wish more counsellors would do that when they encounter straight spouses, ignorant ones can prove disasterous for the straight spouse.

This is a Straightspouse Forum, not a classroom. As another poster said this person should have gone through other channels to be allowed to post

... In my opinion

Re: Counselling/therapy needs of straight partners

I want to say my first therapist when I discovered my GX was cheating on me was a straight woman specializing in general therapy.

I recall asking her, and they are not supposed to share, if she was straight.

I can't tell you how comforting it was to talk to a normal straight woman. I don't think I would have been able get help from a therapist that somehow thought a  gay person marrying a straight was somehow ok and normal.

I urge anyone seeking therapy to be comfortable with the therapist they find and don't settle for one that is further traumatizing you and not helpful.

Re: Counselling/therapy needs of straight partners

I don't beleive any therapist I've seen was specifically trained to deal with the type of trauma I was recovering from.  Personally, if this person is for real I think they should be doing this kind of research -- apparently nobody else is doing it, for one thing.

Re: Counselling/therapy needs of straight partners

When my abusive narcissist GIDx finally came out, the therapist I had been seeing was a gay woman who was married to her female therapist partner who was my GIDx’s therapist, and who has previously been married to a man.  It was all so additionally incestuous, that I bailed on therapy entirely.

It was no longer a safe space for me.

Kimberly Brooks specializes in this kind of therapy but unfortunately, she wants $300+ an hour and takes virtually no insurance.

So, therapy is not really much of an option either.  Most modern therapy seems designed to help the closeted person but not those they hurt.

Re: Counselling/therapy needs of straight partners

I think we should know what kind of counseling and support is on the table with this study. Basically - is it oriented around couples trying to make a MOM work or is it about supporting a straight partner through the most existential crisis of their life that has effectively ended their marriage and changed everything they thought they knew.

Re: Counselling/therapy needs of straight partners

I've checked the guys website out and I would say he's legit. Small private practice in a small town. I would suggest to him, however, that just reading posts here should provide him all the insight he needs.

Re: Counselling/therapy needs of straight partners

it's a very fly by night approach - no introducing himself or anything like that.

If he's legit, I do think it's worth considering.  But to each his own ...

This person said in the first and only post he made that it was " issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity." he specialised in.
No straight person *I* have ever met has issues with gender identity so I'm presuming he leans toward the LGBTQ people...

I don't mind at all if he takes his request to the MOM board and keeps it in there
